Abstract

MARTINEZ LAGUNA, Ygnacio et al. Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. Mundo nano [online]. 2016, vol.9, n.17, pp.7-23.  Epub Aug 28, 2020. ISSN 2448-5691.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485691e.2016.17.58125.

The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma of Puebla is one of the largest public and autonomous universities in México, and it had long tradition in the nanoscience field and the production of different kind of nanomaterials. The research groups involved are organized in a well-stablished research teams in the so called Cuerpos Académicos recognized by the Secretary of Public Education after a strict evaluation process by academic peers. Most of the nanoscience researchers are recognized by the National Research System.

The main areas that these researchers investigate are new nanomaterials using carbon, silicon as a base material and doping them with different compounds from single atoms such as: indium, tin, titanium, germanium among others; and even using organic materials to obtain materials with new properties such as solar cells or nanomaterials capable to adhere pollutants or using in bioremediation in soil, water and air using different solvents, including petroleum derivatives, diluting them and captured using nanostructures as catalytic converters.

All nanostructured materials are evaluated using photic, electrical and chemical new properties with the state of the art equipment. In these nanomaterials the new properties were evaluated as well as, their possible applications in biomedicine, engineering or chemical processes. Importantly, BUAP had more than 30 years working in this field and nowadays is a referent in nanoscience, nanomaterials and nanostructures in Puebla and the region. The experimental and theoretical work support a strong formation of students in undergraduate, as well as post-graduate studies including master in science and doctorate programs with a recognition by the National Program of Postgraduate’s Studies quality by CONACyT-México.

In conclusion, nanoscience is an important research field in the BUAP and it is in expansion adding innovation with multiple new applications in several fields such as biomedicine, materials and electronic devices. Our infrastructure is capable to improve innovation in several industrial fields in Puebla and the south-southeast region.
