This review paper is about the basics of biliary sphincterotomy during the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and its role in the treatment of choledocholithiasis. Is not the objective to do a deep review. The goal is to review the basic aspects for the general gastroenterologist and the fellows in gastroenterology or advanced endoscopy.
