Abstract
SILIS-CRAVIOTO, Juan C.; HERRERA-SERVIN, Miguel Á.; PARDO-GANEM, Diego R. and ZAVALA-CASTILLO, Julio C.. Safety devices against SARS-CoV-2 in the gastrointestinal endoscopy department at the General Hospital of Mexico. Endoscopia [online]. 2020, vol.32, n.4, pp.125-129. Epub Oct 11, 2021. ISSN 2444-6483. https://doi.org/10.24875/end.20000058.
In the last months of 2019, the new type 2 coronavirus appeared, which causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2). Recent recommendations from international organizations and endoscopic associations allow the endoscopist to create a safe environment, through the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The foregoing motivates the creation of new barrier devices that add defense capacity to the endoscopist, the objective of our work being to make known the different safety devices developed in the practice of endoscopy during the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19), in addition to mentioning those that were used in the gastrointestinal endoscopy service at the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga”.
Conclusions:
The devices used represent a coadjuvant tool in the reduction of drops and aerosols during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. These devices are not considered as a replacement for the other PPE, but can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 between medical personnel and the patient, as well as future similar serious respiratory illnesses during endoscopic procedures.
