From a gender perspective, the conflict between work and family life is studied among male and female employees from a federal institution with an its institutional culture highly presenteeist and where employees are required to work long hours. Men and women experience similar level of conflicts. To higher extent than men, women give up their personal and leisure time, promotions and professional training as well as neglect their health problems. For men and women, conflicts are related to the number of working hours, and the requirement to work during personal time. Women who live with individuals with special needs and having a live-in partner experience higher levels of conflict than those who don´t. These variables are not significant for men. Conclusions and implications are discussed.
