Objective:

Contribute to the search for elements that help consolidate sustainable food systems.

Methodology:

A systematic review based on metasynthesis was carried out; seven databases were searched, obtaining 237 results, of which 133 scientific articles were selected due to inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Results:

It was found that 9 articles address this problem by maintaining industrialized food systems, but making technical (technological) improvements or making production and supply chains more efficient. While 4 articles address it from the reduction in the distances that food travels, but focused on rural production; 5 investigations from the local; 3 from the peri-urban and 1 in the regional. The largest number of investigations (73) suggest a food system based on a type of urban production; not to mention that there are systems that can be considered hybrid (16). In addition to using some kind of link between different elements.

Limitations:

The systematic review is limited to the material contained in the selected databases and on the date established for the search.

Conclusions:

It is concluded that the characteristics of sustainable food systems vary depending on the context of the cities, which does not prevent learning between similar experiences.
