Objective:

To analyze the relationship between food security and family farming in rural households in Mexico.

Methodology:

Using data from the National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH) from 2008 to 2018, two multinomial logit models were estimated. The first one, for the categories of food security and their determinants; the second one evaluates the factors that influenced the different categories of family farming.

Results:

Schooling, income and housing conditions have been important for food security. Regarding the determinants of family farming, income has been important for small scales, while labor has been significant for a large scale.

Limitations:

Security food estimate does not include children due to the incompatibility in the questions of the ENIGH 2008 with the 2018; however, the estimate with adults offers a good approximation to the analysis.

Conclusions:

The effect of family farming has been small but significant in reducing moderate and severe food insecurity in recent years, while the probability of carrying out family farming on a larger scale increases if rural households have food security.
