Abstract

MARTINEZ-DOMINGUEZ, Marlen. ICT social appropriation: The case of internet in Mexico. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2020, vol.30, n.55, e20917.  Epub Dec 06, 2021. ISSN 2395-9169.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v30i55.917.

Objective:

To present a conceptual review of the relationship between Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and economic development; as well as exposing the appropriation of these technologies, through access and use of internet in Mexico.

Methodology:

A descriptive statistical analysis, based on data from the National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Households (ENDUTIH) 2015-2017.

Results:

Low level of internet access by households, where only one in two has a network connection. Regarding use, the results reflect that people appropriate the internet for information search, entertainment, communication, social networks and to a lesser extent for economic purposes.

Limitations:

The limited information from ENDUTIH to deepen into the appropriation of cyberspace.

Conclusions:

Low internet access and online activities carried out by users are explained by the existence of gaps in gender, age, income, poverty, educational level and place of residence.

Keywords : regional development; ICT; economic development; access; use; internet.
