The objective of this paper is to analyze the competencies that the Mexican postgraduates say apply to their work activities, as well as those that they apply according to the employers' opinion. In addition, it seeks to know how the generic skills applied the personal-work characteristics of the graduate and the professional profile explain some characteristics of academic production. A sample of graduate students from 18 Mexican higher education institutions (IES) and their respective employers was obtained; a descriptive analysis of the applied generic competences is presented; a linear regression analysis is used to determine the relationship between the typology of competencies and academic production, and a multinomial logistic model to study the typology of competences, personal-work characteristics and professional profile in relation to academic production. A concordance was found in the competencies applied by the graduates in their work activities, based on the assessment of graduates and employers. It was also identified that academic production is related to having products with intellectual property or registration, participate in research projects, disseminate knowledge, have links with colleagues, belong to the National System of Researchers, teach classes and direct theses with the competences dedicated to professionalization, research activities, social commitment and leadership. The competences applied by the graduates according to their opinion and that of employers, and the applied competences that have relation with the characteristics of the academic production, represent for the educational program the application of the professional profiles and of exit. The knowledge of the competencies applied by the graduates allows the feedback of professional profiles and graduation profiles, oriented to the training by postgraduate competences according to the social-labor trends, as were in their time the requirements of certain professional competences in the time of the industrial revolution or as are the requirements of the current knowledge society.
