Abstract

The objective of this study was to generate technical-economic information on bovine production systems based on creole breeds introduced in tropical areas of Mexico. For this, a random sampling survey was carried out with producers that breed Romosinuano and Lechero Tropical specimens in the states of San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Chiapas. Producers had an average age of 53 years, higher education and experience in the livestock activity for 24 years. The production systems were of the pastoral type and the performance parameters of the Romosinuano breed were birth and weaning weights of 29 and 172 kg, 83% fertility and a 426-day Interval period between births. These parameters for the Lechero Tropical breed were 28 and 178 kg, 81% and 389 days, respectively. Likewise, a genotype distribution of 46.4% pure, 26.9% half blood and 26.7% other crosses stands out for calving females; for stallions, it was 98% pure and 2% half blood. Producers were found to have limited control over technical-administrative information, a condition that can be overcome through the adoption of good livestock and business management practices. In general terms, creole breeds have zootechnical advantages that translate into greater profitability of production systems and make them a viable alternative for crosses with other breeds, since they can transfer adaptability genes to the tropical environment, so their conservation should be prioritized.
