OCHOA-HERNANDEZ, María Elena; VILLANUEVA-GUITERREZ, Emmanuel; MARTINEZ-CORDOVA, Luis Rafael  and  CALDERON, Kadiya. Biofloc Technology: A Way for Sustainable Aquaculture. Epistemus (Sonora) [online]. 2023, vol.17, n.34, pp.123-130.  Epub Dec 08, 2023. ISSN 2007-8196.  https://doi.org/10.36790/epistemus.v17i34.282.

Aquaculture has become the food producer sector with the highest growth rate in the last years. Nevertheless, this activity has an important environmental impact, mainly due to the use of great quantities of water and polluted effluents. Biofloc technology (BFT) offers a sustainable alternative that through the metabolic activity of a microbial community can help to maintain water quality and be used as food by aquaculture organisms, offering benefits to the immune system of the aquatic organisms. This article presents the BFT as a potential tool to obtain quality food that can lead aquaculture into a sustainable path.

Keywords : Bioflocs; Aquaculture; Sustainable.
