Abstract

GARCIA CANAL, Emiliano. Aesthetic Operations: the insertion of estrangement as a political irruption. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.35, e0002010.  Epub Nov 27, 2023. ISSN 2007-8110.  https://doi.org/10.22201/crim.20078110e.2023.1065.

This paper seeks to analyze the audiovisual production Viral Racism in Mexico from the category of dispositive elaborated by Michel Foucault, in order to propose that, based on the possibility of understanding that every dispositive is a machine that makes one see and speak, this video, as well as many other critical and resistant aesthetic practices, can be thought of as aesthetic operations; that is, as irruptions, of an aesthetic-affective nature, on the semiotic dimension of the social signification that constitutes the regime of knowledge. Therefore, the first part of this text presents a description of the case of analysis that, besides serving as an audiovisual and casuistic example of a resistant aesthetic practice, also allows us to think that the aesthetic is not exclusively conditioned to the artistic. Subsequently, the category of dispositive is analyzed and its links with knowledge, power and subjectivation processes are reviewed, with the idea of reviewing how this example of analysis functions as a dispositive in at least two dimensions. Finally, the video Viral Racism in Mexico is linked to the reflection on what is understood here as aesthetic operations, which allows emphasizing the relationship between aesthetics and politics from Jacques Rancière’s perspective.

Keywords : dispositive; aesthetic operations; racism; subjectivation; knowledge regime.
