Abstract

OSPINA ESCOBAR, Angélica María. Lilith and Eva Stereotypes to women who use drugs among providers of residential treatment for drug abuse. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2022, vol.17, n.33, e0002000.  Epub May 05, 2023. ISSN 2007-8110.

This study analyzes the existing gender stereotypes toward women who use drugs in the discourses of directors of rehabilitation centers. We conduct in-depth interviews among directors of rehabilitation centers (n=28) and women users of these services (n= 23) to understand their perceptions of women’s barriers to accessing treatment. Two stereotypes predominate in directors’ perceptions regarding the barriers to accessing residential treatment among women with drug abuse disorder: the rebellious (Lilith) and victimized woman (Eva). Both stereotypes psychologize women’s impediments in accessing substance use treatment, making the structural factors of inequality invisible, reinforcing stigma towards women who use drugs, and consolidating the existing gaps in access to services among men and women.

Keywords : stereotypes; gender; treatment; substance use; addictions; México.
