Abstract

AVILA HUERTA, Alejandro. The sexual dimension of identity: between being, naming and acting. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2022, vol.17, n.33, e0001995.  Epub May 05, 2023. ISSN 2007-8110.

Throughout its history, sexual diversity has been studied from multiple academic disciplines, although social sciences and humanities, with their varied theoretical paradigms, have been the predominant areas of approach. This has generated complex debates and complicated discussions about it, and the organization of reality that has been built around it in concepts, terms and categories has been one of the main activities of interest among scholars. Based on the above, and following a primarily phenomenological paradigm, answers will be proposed here to some of the issues that are currently raised as central to the study of sexual diversity. Can the sexes, genders, expressions and orientations be considered identities or are they only acts? Should they be named or not? Are their dynamics the result of internalized socialization routines or a mere reflection of cultural fictions.

Keywords : Identity; significance; performance; communication studies; sexual diversity.
