Sociocultural studies on youth in Mexico usually include an analysis of three institutions that permeate this age group: 1) school, 2) family and, 3) labor market. These institutions form a framework that conditions the livelihood strategies of young people. With this background, this article analyzes the livelihood strategies that currently exist and are implemented by young people from the municipality of Malinalco, State of Mexico. The conceptual and methodological elements that support this article are found in the concept of livelihood strategies and that of social trajectories. Both concepts allowed to obtain narratives of 11 key informants, from which in this article some fragments are retaken. The results indicate that the decision that guides a young person to choose one or more strategies is conditioned by the situations that occur in the personal, school and / or family environment. Thus, youth build their social trajectories, which have the characteristic of resembling a maze of decisions, conditions and resources.
