Abstract

VIZCAINO DE LA TORRE, Andrea Alicia. Fighting over Marriage: Analysis of the Legislative Debate over Equal Marriage in Mexico City. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2018, vol.12, n.24, pp.339-366. ISSN 2007-8110.

This paper is an in-depth analysis of the debate that took place in 2009 at the Mexico City legislature around the modifications of the Civil Code that approved same-sex marriage. This analysis shows the terms in which the defense of the doxa and the opposition, that strived to revolutionize the representation of marriage, are expressed and expose the uncomfortable dissent between two irreconcilable ethical parameters: the heteronomous and the autonomous. From this confrontation emerges the meaning given to state and social institutions and their relationship with the individuals and their agency. Furthermore, the study finds evidence of how the country’s history, the fears and ghosts inherited, build a debate that is framed in a global phenomenon.

Keywords : same-sex mariage; human rights; gender; Mexico City; Legislative Assembly.
