Abstract

DE ALMEIDA, Maria Geralda. Jack Kérouac’s lyric and poetical America. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2015, vol.10, n.19, pp.102-127. ISSN 2007-8110.

The purpose of this text is to highlight the ways of understanding the geography of the book On the Road by extending the notions of imagery and poetic geography. At first, the reader will get a glimpse of the underlying context, which is Kérouac’s grasp on "how" America is perceived and revealed, through textual architecture and the creation of language. In addition, the reader will discover the characteristics of the beat movement. Kérouac was considered an avatar and this book was considered a bible. Two landscapes in the novel will be presented, natural/urban and urban/city. Finally the sensitive vicinity between literature and geography will be reaffirmed by the fact that both constitute a reflection on man and his being in this world and his relation to the world by the way he lives.

Keywords : cultural landscape; Poetic literature; Sensitive geography; Landscape- Movement; Kérouac.
