Abstract

POLLMANN, Andreas. El papel de la ascendencia en la idea de "lo británico" y de "lo alemán": más allá de los mitos en torno a la distinción entre naciones cívicas y étnicas. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2015, vol.9, n.18, pp.09-25. ISSN 2007-8110.

This article focuses on ancestry as a controversial marker of Britishness/Germanness. Considering both developments in nationality law and empirical data from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP, 2003), it illustrates that the "classic"distinction into civic nations and ethnic nations tends to overestimate cross-national differences, while underestimating within-country variations. The fact that-in both England and Germany-higher levels of formal education are strongly associated with more ethnically inclusive notions of "legitimate national membership" underlines the potential of formal education in contemporary multicultural societies.

Keywords : ancestry; national culture; civic and ethnic nations; education; national membership.
