OEHMICHEN-BAZAN, Cristina and PARIS-POMBO, María Dolores. El rumor y el racismo sanitario durante la epidemia de influenza A/H1N1. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2010, vol.5, n.9, pp.145-173. ISSN 2007-8110.
The flu epidemic outbreak in Mexico caused by the A/H1N1 virus and the appearance of contagion cases in several countries, untied a wave of fear among the world population. With contradictory and abundant information, and the permanent publication of alarmist news by the mass media, rumors were multiplied and uncertainty grew. Different socio political sectors sought to drift away the anxiety by transforming the inhabitants of the Federal District specifically and Mexicans in general, into scapegoats. The epidemic provided in addition a suitable context for the production and reproduction of racist speeches.
