Abstract

GIMENEZ, Gilberto. La frontera norte como representación y referente cultural en México. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2007, vol.2, n.3, pp.17-34. ISSN 2007-8110.

This article is about the concept of border-line and border-areas as part of a theory of territory, focusing from the perspective of social representations. The Mexican North Frontier has particularly been subject to opposite representations if me consider, on one hand, the Mexican people and, on the other, the anglo-americans. Finally, the paper analyses some issues of an empirical investigation about the representation of the northern borderline among Mexican students from various parts of the country through the "mental maps" method. This investigation reveals the perception of the border as a closed, tragic and conflictive space, but also reveals the strange fascination, sometimes called "northern tropism", that the border-areas exert upon the imagination and dreams of young Mexicans.

Keywords : territorio; frontera; representaciones sociales; comunidades transnacionales; mapas mentales.
