The consumption of tobacco and alcohol has become a public health problem that affects adolescents due to the indiscriminate use of tobacco cigarettes and the excessive intake of alcoholic beverages. The objective of this study was to explore the meaning of the consumption of tobacco cigarettes and alcoholic beverages in adolescents living in urban areas from the perspective of Symbolic Interactionism. The research approach was qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, with a theoretical sample made up of 42 adolescent high school students.
As results, three categories emerged with their respective subcategories that were: interpretative process (motivations), persuasion (social influence) and personal evaluation (decision making). In conclusion, we can say that these findings make it possible to determine the importance of designing priority health strategies with a multidisciplinary approach that have an impact on the reduction, control, and eradication of licit drug use in adolescents.
