The study of functions in high school has been limited only to elementary ones, ignoring hyperbolic and special functions. The latter are generally found in terms of integrals and numerical algorithms must be used to evaluate them, leaving them out of the reach of high school students. In this paper a content update is made in the course of applied mathematics of the high school in which the Lambert W function is added to the study of transcendent functions. In the same way, the curricular proposal considers the study of hyperbolic functions and special functions through mathematical approximations found in terms of elementary functions, which facilitates their implementation in educational software such as GeoGebra. In addition, in this work four examples are presented where the approximations of the functions that are considered in the curricular proposal the functions are applied and that can serve as a guide to show applications related to technology and the daily life of the students.
