Abstract

Evaluation of the strategy against obesity and overweight in school consumption establishments of basic education in Villahermosa, Tabasco. Horiz. sanitario [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.3, pp.155-163. Objective:

To assess the compliance of the "Strategy against overweight and obesity" in school establishments consumption of basic education schools in Villahermosa, Tabasco.

Materials and methods:

An observational, descriptive cross-sectional study; non probabilistic for convenience sampling was used, 15 public elementary schools were studied; data collection was performed by a panel of validated self-assessment, which includes physical and hygiene in establishments (fixed or mobile), with observation of food and beverages sold or distributed characteristics and examine the preparation, handling and sale food.

Results:

60% of fixed or mobile establishments lack of safe spaces. They offer 60% more processed products, foods prepared by hand; in addition, 60% of prepared food products by hand are not allowed, most of them use frying cooking technique; 73.3% retailed bottled soft drinks. 100% of establishments evaluated do not play with hand washing staff.

Discussion:

In Mexico, the obesity epidemic is a problem in all age groups and experience a speed increase has not been registered in any other country. Internationally, there is evidence to establish the contribution of this disease to chronic disease and its burden on care systems health.

Conclusions:

The results show that establishments of basic school consumption in Villahermosa, Tabasco, do not carry out with the program guidelines for the prevention or reduction of overweight or obese.
