Abstract
FUENTES, Elena and ORTIZ-ROJAS, Karen. Adoption of an illicit crop as a livelihood: the case of poppy cultivation in a rural area of Guerrero, Mexico. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2021, n.22, pp.329-349. Epub Nov 03, 2021. ISSN 2007-4964.
Rural areas of Mexico confront multiple problems that sometimes lead producers to seek alternative livelihoods or forms of survival. This is the case of poppy cultivation in the Sierra region of the state of Guerrero, Mexico. To analyze this problem, a qualitative study was carried out based on interviews with poppy producers. Results show, on the one hand, the large economic return provided by cultivating illicit crops compared to traditional ones. On the other, the experience of producers leads them to consider, first, that the Mexican government has been ineffective in providing solutions to this problem and, second, that the profits obtained provide the fastest way to resolve the socioeconomic deficiencies of their families.
