Abstract

FERIA ARROYO, Demetrio Arturo. Religious Change in León, Guanajuato. A Study of Religious Interactions between Catholics and Evangelicals Christians. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2021, n.22, pp.173-206.  Epub Nov 03, 2021. ISSN 2007-4964.

This article analyzes the process of religious change in the interaction between Catholics and evangelical Christians in León, Guanajuato, a historical bastion of Catholicism where urbanization and the modernization of social life have generated a process of social differentiation that has decreased the influence of Catholicism and fostered the growth of evangelical groups. Our research on the interaction between Catholics and evangelicals analyzes the variations in the balance of power between the two groups based on the theoretical framework proposed by Norbert Elias. Specifically, we adopt the figures of “the established” and “the outcasts” and apply it in a case study in three dimensions: one temporal, that links the processes of social differentiation to the figuration of Catholics and evangelicals; one social, where analysis focuses on the networks that exist between Catholics and evangelical Christians and their variation in the balance of power; and one socio-personal that examines the effects of this figuration on the emotions of the members of both groups.

Keywords : religious change; religious interactions; Catholics; evangelical Christians; León; Guanajuato.
