Abstract

ENTRENA-DURAN, Francisco. Globalization and the crisis of state-centrism as the context of current political leaderships. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2019, n.18, pp.79-104. ISSN 2007-4964.

Current modes of globalization have given rise to an unstable and unpredictable socioeconomic, political-institutional and symbolic-cultural context that constitutes one of the fundamental causes of the present crisis of the traditional state-centric model of sociopolitical organization. The dynamics and operating procedures inherent in that model were easier to identify, manage and anticipate than in the current situation, in which we face high levels of insecurity and unpredictability. This article examines the origins, characteristics and uncertainties of this worldwide context, which materialize in specific cases as a more-or-less ‘glocalized’ setting in which today's political leaderships are produced and reproduced. Following Bourdieu, the paper considers this setting as a social ‘environment or field’ that fosters a series of particularly suitable collective dispositions and/or predispositions for the extension of different leadership habituses of a markedly personalist and/or populist nature. Bourdieu sees this 'environment or field' as a social game space that shapes a systemic framework of relationships, actions and social interactions that cannot be explained separately,or in isolation, from one another, but only as part of the total system that constitutes that framework.

Keywords : globalization; state-centrism; production and reproduction of political leaderships; Bourdieu.
