Abstract

VALDEZ ZEPEDA, Andrés  and  HUERTA FRANCO, Delia Amparo. The financing of political parties and citizens’ trust in Mexico. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2018, n.15, pp.309-331. ISSN 2007-4964.

This article describes and analyzes the financing of political parties in Mexico in recent years in relation to levels of citizens’ trust, while also addressing the institutionalization and competitiveness of the party system, and analyzing the funding of parties in relation to the growing rates of abstention among Mexican voters. It concludes that greater funding from public sources has contributed to deteriorating the image and level of confidence that citizens manifest towards these political institutions. Therefore, it considers that it is feasible to reduce the amount of public financing given to political parties without affecting the quality of the country’s incipient democracy.

Keywords : financing; political parties; trust; institutionalization; competitiveness; democracy; Mexico.
