Abstract

GARCIA FERNANDEZ, Estrellita. Introductory texts to the regional architecture of Guadalajara. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2017, n.14, pp.313-337. ISSN 2007-4964.

This article analyzes three texts that preceded the proposals of a modern architecture with regional characteristics that came to be called the Escuela Tapatía (Guadalajara School). It examines the context in which those proposals emerged, since it is widely-considered that they strongly influenced the emergence of that School. The texts were written by three professors at the Guadalajara Free School of Engineers: “Inhabitancy in Jalisco” by Gabriel Castaños, and “Inhabitancy type in Jalisco” by Ambrosio Ulloa, both published in the Boletín de la Escuela de Ingenieros (Bulletin of the School of Engineers) in 1902; and El hombre y la arquitectura (Man and Architecture) by Agustin Basave, published in 1919.

This selection was based on the wide diffusion that these texts enjoyed among builders in the state of Jalisco, and an examination which revealed that their contents offered keys that would guide later architectural conceptions and activities, two important topics of discussion in the national sphere from the mid-19th century, and fundamental issues for new architectural proposals.

Keywords : Guadalajara; Free School of Engineers; architecture.
