Abstract

BARRERA GUZMAN, Mónica Lolbé  and  FLORES GALAZ, Mirta Margarita. Psychosocial Predictors of Positive Mental Health in Young People. Acta de investigación psicol [online]. 2020, vol.10, n.3, pp.80-92.  Epub Oct 25, 2021. ISSN 2007-4719.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fpsi.20074719e.2020.3.360.

The growing prevalence of mental health issues, in addition to the challenges and demands on psychosocial resources that entry into higher education places on young people, make it necessary to investigate their resources such as positive mental health as well as its relationship with diverse variables. This paper analyzes the role of perceived social support and the cultural variable individualism-collectivism as predictors of positive mental health in 862 university students selected through a non-probabilistic sample in the city of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico by means of a quantitative transverse study of causal cut using a Positive Mental Health Scale, scales of perceived social support from family and friends, and individualism-collectivism scale. Regressions were performed for each dimension of positive mental health. Results show that individualism and collectivism, mainly in their horizontal dimensions, perceived social support from family and friends are positive predictors and vertical collectivism is a negative predictor for the positive mental health dimensions. The results provide empirical evidence in the study of positive mental health with social and cultural variables contributing to the theory for research or psychological application in health promotion.
