Abstract

CERVANTES-PALMA, César et al. Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of sacral neuromodulation as voiding dysfunction treatment and its effects on quality of life in patients seen at a Mexican referral center. Rev. mex. urol. [online]. 2019, vol.79, n.4, e01.  Epub Nov 24, 2020. ISSN 2007-4085.

Background:

Sacral neuromodulation is a therapy for modulating and restoring the spinal reflexes that influence micturition and defecation. Multiple indications for its implementation are currently approved. There are few studies in Mexico that evaluate the treatment’s efficacy and safety.

Objetive:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of sacral neuromodulation in the treatment of chronic voiding dysfunction, and its effect on quality of life, in patients seen at the Hospital Central Militar.

Materials and methods:

A case record review of the patients treated with sacral neuromodulation due to chronic voiding dysfunction, within the time frame of January 1, 2010 to June 30, 2018, was conducted. Quality of life was evaluated through the SF-36 v2 (Mexican version) and ICIQSF instruments and treatment efficacy was assessed through voiding diaries and urodynamic parameters. The IBM SPSS 22.0 program was utilized.

Results:

Forty-one patients (16 males and 25 females) with chronic voiding dysfunction were included. All the patients presented with symptom improvement in the trial phase of the therapy and underwent definitive neurostimulator placement. Improvement above 65% in quality of life, bladder capacity, and postmicturition volume was achieved.

Conclusions:

Our results were similar to those reported in the literature, in relation to efficacy, safety, and improved quality of life. Sacral neuromodulation is a durable therapy for nonobstructive voiding dysfunction, which can also be reversed. Prospective studies are needed to evaluate its medium-term and long-term efficacy.
