Abstract

VARELA-RIVERA, J. L.; CHAN-ESQUIVEL, S.; FERNANDEZ-BAQUEIRO, L. E.  and  MORENO-HERRERA, J. A.. Comportamiento de muros de mampostería confinada con aberturas sujetos a cargas fuera del plano. Concr. cem. investig. desarro [online]. 2015, vol.7, n.1, pp.52-65. ISSN 2007-3011.

In this work, the behavior of confined masonry walls subjected to uniform out-of-plane loads was studied. Four full-scale walls were tested in the laboratory: three with openings and one without openings. The variables studied were the type of opening and the type of interior vertical confining element. Analytical out-of-plane strengths were determined using the compressive strut, the yielding line, and the bidirectional strut methods. Analytical and experimental out-of-plane strengths were compared. Based on experimental results it was concluded that, the out-of-plane strength increases as the aspect ratio of the wall panel and the in-plane stiffness of the interior vertical confining element increase. Based on the comparisons between analytical and experimental results it was concluded that the bidirectional strut method predicts more accurately the out-of-plane strength of the confined walls studied.

Keywords : confined masonry; out-of-plane strength; openings; bidirectional strut method.
