Abstract

MONTELONGO, Alfonso. La locura está en los ojos de quien la mira: los personajes de Sergio Pitol. Valenciana [online]. 2010, vol.3, n.6, pp.91-108. ISSN 2007-2538.

After briefly reviewing the difficulties to define madness in any field and stressing that this condition is usually identified by an observer, no by the patient himself, the paper focuses on five types of mental disorder displayed by main characters in Sergio Pitol’s fictional, essayistic and autobiographical writings: plain stupidity, unpredictable speech, delirium, memory trying to reconstruct the past, and verbiage as a symptom of low self-esteem. The latter are essential to Pitol’s work.

Keywords : Sergio Pitol; madness; literary characters.
