Abstract

ROSA ANAYA, César de la  and  POIRE, Sophie. An Evocation of The Grey Automobile: The Digital Restoration of the Classic of Mexican Silent Cinema. Intervención (Méx. DF) [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.18, pp.21-32. ISSN 2007-249X.  https://doi.org/10.30763/intervencion.2018.17.197.

How do you restore a film so many years -95- after its release? The Digital Restoration Laboratory of the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico wondered about this when it began The Grey Automobile project. What guide will we follow to legitimatize the work already done and how will we effectively apply it to this film? Is it possible, as suggested by Cesare Brandi, to restore an original version from so long ago (1919)? This REPORT describes and narrates the learning experiences during said restoration, the first of its type for this film and the first done digitally in its entirety by a Mexican institution.

Keywords : digital restoration; film material; non-film material; silent cinema; The Grey Automobile; Enrique Rosas Aragón; Mexico.
