Abstract

ORTEGA ORDAZ, Alfredo Adolfo. Escultura novohispana en la región de la Mixteca oaxaqueña (New Spain sculpting in the Oaxacan Mixtec region): An Interdisciplinary Study on Preservation-restoration of Mexico. Intervención (Méx. DF) [online]. 2017, vol.8, n.16, pp.82-87. ISSN 2007-249X.

The conservation-restoration of heritage entities makes it possible to obtain information regarding their materiality, manufacturing technique, and historical context of creation. However, the knowledge produced by this professional field is scarcely disseminated despite its great potential to generate lines of research, particularly from an interdisciplinary perspective. The book Escultura Novohispana en la región de la Mixteca Oaxaqueña (New Spain sculpting in the Oaxacan Mixtec region, Garcia Lascurain 2012a) introduces as a significant contribution to this field, emerging not only from a recent intervention project concerning the sculptures of the temples of Coixtlahuaca and Yanhuitlán, Oaxaca, Mexico, but also being the product of the work of a team comprised of specialists from different professional fields, including art historians, art restaurateurs, and biologists. This BOOK REVIEW focuses on critically analyzing the different contents in this publication, all the while leading the reader to reflect on the importance of the discipline of conservation-restoration and its dissemination.

Keywords : polychrome sculpture; altarpiece; materiality; Mixtec; conservation-restoration; dissemination; interdisciplinary; Oaxaca; Mexico.
