Abstract
CASTILLO-CASTILLO, Mónica et al. Analysis of meteorological drought in the Fuerte River Basin, Mexico. Tecnol. cienc. agua [online]. 2017, vol.8, n.1, pp.35-52. ISSN 2007-2422. https://doi.org/10.24850/j-tyca-2017-01-03.
In this research is presented a temporal and spatial analysis of drought in the Fuerte River Basin for the period 1961 to 2012. The Fuerte River Basin is located Northwest of México, in the area of low pressure which match the great deserts of the world; in the high basin several Indian populations are located and in the low part is located an important irrigation farming area. Two index were calculated: (1) the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and, (2) Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI); both index were calculated in 14 stations of the study area for scales of 3, 6, 12 and 24 months. Data of precipitation, minimum and maximum temperatures were used for the index calculation. The indices were calculated and analyzed in time and space. Results showed that droughts have altered its occurrence patterns and presents with more frequency, intensity and duration in the last decades. It was found two periods with extremes droughts, from 1999 to 2004 and from 2011 onwards. SPEI defines drought periods better and presents a behavior more stable than SPI, moreover shows a clear trend of increase in drought intensity in recent years as a result of reduction on precipitation and increase of temperatures.
