Abstract

MAGANA MAGANA, Miguel Ángel; MOGUEL ORDONEZ, Yolanda Beatriz; SANGINES GARCIA, José Roberto  and  LEYVA MORALES, Carlos Enrique. Importance and structure of honey production chain in Mexico. Rev. mex. de cienc. pecuarias [online]. 2012, vol.3, n.1, pp.49-64. ISSN 2448-6698.

The matter of this research was to analyze the socioeconomic relevance of the production chain and the marketing process of honey in Mexico, as well as examine the problem and influence that this process represents for the beekeeper, particularly onto the behavior of the prices, the generated value and its distribution. Fundamentals of intraregional trade and economics of agricultural market were used as a methodological and theoretical framework, which allow analyze the integration and relationship among the market levels. It was found that the socioeconomic relevance of beekeeping is limited mainly to its contribution of foreign exchange and generating employment and income in rural areas. The main marketing channel for honey-industry in bulk is made by, the beekeeper, the rural collectors, the wholesale trading company and international sale agent. The production and marketing of honey in Mexico is made by mobilizing, processing, packaging and distributing to either external or domestic market, but with limited benefit to producer when appropriate. Harvesting and supply of honey in the market are focused on a period of a few months, this situation and the pay-off producers, increases the owning value advantage which the other links possess in the chain, being mainly the wholesale buyers the ones who get more benefits in bulk market because they are who determines prices. Thus, the value that is added in the productive and commercial chain of honey is not fairly distributed and the difference lies in the ability of appropriation or market power of each participant.
