Abstract

ARELLANO VERA, Williams et al. Identification of the Myostatin Q204X variant in Charbray cattle in Mexico. Rev. mex. de cienc. pecuarias [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.2, pp.193-198. ISSN 2448-6698.

The Q204X myostatin allele was identified by an allelic discrimination assay using DNA from 34 Charbray bulls under performance testing in northwest Mexico. A total of 9.3 % of the bulls were heterozygotic Q204X allele carriers and gene frequency was 5 %. This is the first report of the Q204X allele in Charbray cattle in Mexico. These findings will allow further studies identifying and quantifying the Q204X segregating effect, thus supporting current Charbray productive and reproductive genetic improvement strategies.

Keywords : Charbary; Frequencies; Q204X; Myostatin.
