Abstract

In Mexico the central area is the largest producer and consumer of prickly pear nationally, in coastal, northeast, south and southeast areas has low consumption of fruit due to the lack of distribution and to the high cost of transport to these geographic areas. This research was conducted in 2014 with the aim to develop a model to improve product distribution through minimization of transport costs from producing areas to consuming areas; obtaining optimal distribution and routes to market the product, using the appropriate transport model corresponding to mathematical techniques of linear programming, based on the least-cost method which assigns the highest amount possible of offer to lower unit cost, considering two scenarios, first is the closed market dynamics and second shows the open market solution. The results show that only five states are self-sufficient and have the capability to offer their surplus to the demanding states, enabling them to participate in open economy exports, or industrialize in sub products their surplus. Transportation costs demonstrate how these are proportional to the distances touring, so from the model were activated the routes that allowed to minimize them.
