Abstract

PRECIADO-RANGEL, Pablo et al. Production of jalapeño seedlings fertilized with urine. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.7, pp.1481-1489. ISSN 2007-0934.

Urine is considered an organic fertilizer with great potential in sustainable agricultural production systems because of its nutrient content; however, it cannot be applied directly due to its high salt content, so it is necessary previous conditioning to lower pH and salinity. In the present study the dilution effect of urine in water (1, 2, 3 and 4 dS m-1), plus two additional treatments (Steiner solution and distilled water) was evaluated on growth and nutrient absorption of jalapeño seedlings. Fertilized seedlings with diluted urine had higher nitrogen content (35.4-59.9%) than those fertilized with Steiner solution. Furthermore, no significant differences in growth parameters between seedlings fertilized with Steiner nutrient solution or with diluted urine 1 dS m-1 were observed. It was concluded that diluted urine can be used as an alternative source of nutrition for seedling production of jalapeno.

Keywords : Capsicum annuum L.; nutrient solution; organic fertilizer.
