Abstract

PEREZ VAZQUEZ, Arturo; LEYVA TRINIDAD, Doris Arianna  and  GARCIA ALBARADO, J. Cruz. Ecotourism: a case study of the State of Veracruz. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.spe5, pp.1015-1025. ISSN 2007-0934.

Mexico is one of the leading tourist destinations in the world, due to its biodiversity, agro-ecological regions, rivers and coasts, for this the State of Veracruz is a destination of great interest for the development of ecotourism. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the level of community participation in the development of these resorts and their level of sustainability. We interviewed 10 owners of ecotourism centers located in the municipalities of Catemaco, Huatusco and Actopan in the State of Veracruz. It was found that these regions are located in the jungle and mangrove ecosystems, they have a high community involvement, regular tourist inflow, which aims to have a closer contact with nature with low profitability, even though they promote the regional economic development. It is concluded that several rural communities of the State of Veracruz are actively participating in the development of ecotourism, particularly those located in the biodiverse ecosystems adjacencies with cultural traits. There is also a positive perception about the relationship between ecotourism and sustainable local development.

Keywords : ecosystems; sustainability; nature tourism.
