This paper examines some shortcomings of political competition in Mexico and Argentina in connection with the model of democratization. This is part of a preliminary distinction between quality of democracy tout court (which will take the paper) and treating the performance of democracy as a political regime, where the competition is crucial dimension, and quality of democracy in the broadest sense, incorporating assessments and state institutions. The problem of the rotation of Argentina, expressed in the impossibility (since 1983 to date) for any actor not meet the Peronist presidential term in office, and the problem of the widespread distrust in Mexico, manifested in recurrent post-election response ; are durable and relevant fault of their democracies. For the analysis of these failures, attention is paid to how political orders transited to democracy. The hypothesis holds that some of the quality problems can be analyzed in key costs caused by the peculiar characteristics of democratization. In particular, the combination of the type of transition (continuous / batch) with the model (consensual-conflictual) the consolidation of democracy were, in the cases studied here, assistive conditions for political competition deficit.
