Abstract

MORALES GONZALEZ, José. Study and popular knowledge in The Essays. By michel de montaigne. En-clav. pen [online]. 2018, vol.12, n.24, pp.57-83. ISSN 2594-1100.

The present work explores the notion of study in Michel de Montaigne’s The Essays highlighting the role that popular knowledge plays in it. From his perspective, the study is understood as the occupation of the person on the self in pursuit of freedom and is opposed to school education. Montaigne alludes to human nature, customs, fortune and death like main references that -in his opinion- are integrated in popular wisdom, being a simple guide for study. It concludes characterizing the study, in the peculiarity of the author, with a set of techniques, such as retirement, philosophizing without philosophers, the use of plain language and the use of extraordinary stories.

Keywords : Study; Education; Popular Knowledge; Montaigne.
