Abstract

MONTERRUBIO-RICO, Tiberio; CANCINO MURILLO, Ramón; PEREZ-ARTEAGA, Alejandro  and  LEMUS ORTIZ, Elvia. New breeding locality for Charadrius nivosus in central Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.1, e576.  Epub July 03, 2020. ISSN 1870-7459.  https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2020.21.1.453.

Reporting breeding sites for the Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus) is important, because of its threatened status in Mexico and its vulnerability to habitat modification. C. nivosus has extensive distribution in Mexico; however, only 35 breeding sites have been reported, of which nine are in the interior. It has been previously recorded in Michoacán, but no breeding has been reported. We present 110 reproductive records (chicks and juveniles) of at least 28 different individuals in Lake Cuitzeo, Michoacán (years 2013 and 2017). These are the first breeding records for the lake and the State. According to this data, Lake Cuitzeo is a relevant site for the conservation of the species in the interior of Mexico. We plan to extend surveys along the lakeshore to determine breeding success and to plan actions to reduce destruction of nesting habitat.

Keywords : Cuitzeo; Michoacan; nesting; shorebirds; Snowy Plover.
