Abstract

CASTRO-TORREBLANCA, Marisol  and  BLANCAS CALVA, Epifanio. Birds of Ciudad Universitaria campus Sur of the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero, Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.2, pp.82-92. ISSN 1870-7459.

We made the check-list of bird species of Ciudad Universitaria campus Sur of the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero, an urban area located southeast of the Chilpancingo city of Guerrero state. We recorded 76 species of birds belonging to 53 genera and 21 families. Seasonally, 52 species were resident, 23 were winter visitors, and a summer resident. Icteridae, Tyrannidae, Parulidae, and Cardinalidae were the families with the highest proportion of species. The species richness we recorded in this study was higher than that reported in other studies in university campuses of Mexico. We discuss the importance of bird community studies in urban and suburban areas and the relevance of including green areas in the planning and design of human settlements.

Keywords : avifauna; urbanization; species; richness; conservation.
