Urban wooded areas are used by some exotic invasive bird species during the process of colonization; the early detection of such species is a necessary action for their surveillance and control. We used a rapid sampling method in urban parks, which requires little planning and execution time, as a strategy for detection of four bird species which are currently increasing their distribution in Mexico: Streptopelia decaocto (Eurasian Collared-Dove) Myiopsitta monachus (Monk Parakeet), Turdus rufopalliatus (Rufous-backed Robin), and Sturnus vulgaris (European Starling). We conducted rapid surveys in most of the parks in the cities of León de los Aldama, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes and Santiago de Querétaro. We report the first records of M. monachus, T. rufopalliatus, and S. vulgaris for the city of León de los Aldama, and M. monachus for Guanajuato. We also recorded the four target species in Santiago de Querétaro; T. rufopalliatus in Guanajuato, and S. vulgaris in Aguascalientes. We analyzed the variables associated with the presence of the species, and the establishment of species in each city in relation to the proportion of parks in which they occurred. We suggest that the use of this method is useful for assessing the current distribution of these species in Mexico and provide base line data for future studies.
