Abstract

HERNANDEZ CASTAN, Jesús et al. Record of the Military Macaw (Ara militaris) in the UMA Santa Cruz Achichipilco, municipality of Teotlalco, Puebla, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.130-136. ISSN 1870-7459.

We report a group of Military macaws (Ara militaris) seen in the area of Santa Cruz Achichipilco, municipality of Teotlalco, Puebla. The record extends the distributional range of the species to the Mixteca Poblana. We also report activity sites and a nocturnal resting site used by the species. The time frame of these observations coincides with the breeding season reported for eastern Mexico. We suggest that monitoring should continue in the area and studies on the ecology of the population found should be done. Additionally, we suggest working with the local human community to highlight the importance of the species and encouraging actions to consider the area as a voluntary natural protected area.

Keywords : population; new record; Psittacidae; resting site; distribution.
