Abstract

PINEDA-LOPEZ, Rubén  and  MALAGAMBA RUBIO, Alejandro. New records of exotic birds in the city of Querétaro, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2011, vol.12, n.2, pp.22-27. ISSN 1870-7459.

Based on results of several studies in the city of Querétaro, Mexico, we provide the first reports of Streptopelia decaocto, Myiopsitta monachus, and Sturnus vulgaris, the latter species having previous records in the state of Querétaro. Records we provide of S. decaocto are not abundant, whereas we observed up to 40 individuals and a nest of M. monachus. S. vulgaris is widely distributed in the forested areas of the city, where we observed reproductive events. We discuss the potential of these species to colonize the area and to produce ecological or economic impacts. We suggest avoiding the importation of M. monachus as a cautionary measure to avoid damages in cities and agricultural areas.

Keywords : exotic birds; invasive species; urban ecology; agricultural pests.
