Abstract

OCHOA CAZARES, René  and  VALDEZ TORAL, Daniel Arturo. Parameniscal cyst as a cause of knee pain in adolescents. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2021, vol.19, n.4, pp.550-553.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 1870-7203.  https://doi.org/10.35366/102545.

Meniscal cysts are an infrequent pathology in children and adolescents; however, it should be considered as a probable diagnosis in all those patients who present non-specific knee pain. The pathology is still not completely clarified, the most accepted theory is the consequent formation of a meniscal lesion, this more often of a horizontal type and in the lateral meniscus with pressure accumulation of synovial fluid at the level of the paramenis, which filters out through a meniscal tear. This produces a valve mechanism that prevents fluid from returning to the joint cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging is the gold standard for its diagnosis since it provides information on the location of the cyst and the type and size of the meniscal lesion. Treatment consists of decompression of the valvular mechanism of the cyst, correcting the meniscal rupture and/or by open excision of the parameniscal cyst.
