Introduction:

Clubfoot is a common pathology of the pediatric population, in relapses there can be used as a surgical alternative of treatment certain tendon transfers such as the tibialis anterior transference (TAT) and reinserting it into the intermediate cuneiform.

Objective:

To identify the associated complications to the distal fixation with a plantar button on patients with relapsing clubfoot surgically treated with TAT; alongside the proposal of a different fixation method with direct suture to the plantar fascia.

Material and methods:

A total of 34 patients were included in the study, with an average age of 5.5 years. They were all treated with TAT and they were divided into two big groups according to the surgical technique used, the complications associated to the distal fixation on each technique were evaluated. The statistical analysis was done using the Fisher exact test and comparison of both groups with the Mann Whitney’s U.

Results:

There were differences between superficial infection process and pain in the distal fixation on the plantar button group (p = 0.063 and 0.035) and elevated risk positive OR of having pain in comparison with the plantar fascia suture group.

Conclusions:

Distal fixation with button proved to significantly have more complications after surgery than in those patients treated with direct suture to the plantar fascia.
