Introduction:
Breastfeeding has multiple benefits for babies and mothers. Many factors influence the attachment to breastfeeding, some of them are the mother’s schooling, age and occupation, the birth route, and the information received before, during and after birth.
Objective:
To describe which factors influence the attachment to breastfeeding in private practice.
Material and methods:
A telephonic or face-to-face questionnaire was applied to 295 mothers attending private office number 755 of the Ángeles Pedregal Hospital. Measures of dispersion and central tendency were calculated, as well as χ2 and Kruskal Wallis test.
Results:
The mean duration of breastfeeding was 6.1 months. The main reason for suspending breastfeeding was work-school. An association between breastfeeding and schooling, full-time jobs, term babies, delivery mode and unique pregnancies was found. The association between breastfeeding and the information received during pregnancy and hospitalization was significant.
Conclusions:
In the population studied, attachment to breastfeeding is higher than the national average, although shorter in duration. The main reason for suspending breastfeeding was work-school. The information received before the delivery and during the hospitalization influence breastfeeding attachment.
