Abstract

ESCOLANO GIMENEZ, Luis Alfonso. El Museo Universal and La América (1857-1860): two different journalistic styles and one americanist perspectiveat the service of liberal Spanish bourgeoisie. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2018, n.68, pp.105-135.  Epub Mar 18, 2020. ISSN 2007-963X.

This article analyses the political alliance between a part of Spanish press of Americanist vocation, the commercial bourgeoisie and the so-called long government of the Liberal Union (1858-1863). These sectors opened a campaign to defend the possession of Cuba and to support important economic interests of groups linked to power, by means of several interventions of diverse kind in Mexico, Santo Domingo and the Pacific Ocean, which failure had a negative influence on the incipient Spanish-Latin American relations.

Keywords : Spanish bourgeois press (1857-1860); Liberal Union foreign policy (1858-1863); Spanish-Latin American relations (19th century); United States expansionism; panhispanist movement.
